Sazali and His Daughter

Oleh Sazali S.Pd

I am Sazali, an English teacher with little experience, but I would like to help my daughter communicate in English at early age. My goal is to ensure she doesn’t struggle with the language as much as I did when I was a child. Instead of teaching her English formally, I expose her to English naturally. It means that I make her become familiar with the language. So, this is not a learning process but an acquisition process, where she picks up English unconsciously and effortlessly. It all takes place in an informal setting. In other words, Aisha is growing up in an English-speaking environment, learning through daily interactions rather than memorizing vocabulary or even studying grammar explicitly.

A few years ago my daughter, Aisha, turned three years old. As a father who graduated from English Department I wanted my daughter to be able to communicate in English at the early age. I believed that mastering English would give her a lot of opportunity in the future, both academically and socially. I actually would like to share my experience or a story of how I helped Aisha become fluent in English. This experience filled with patience, persistence, and love for sure.

English books have become an essential part of this process. Every night, we have a bedtime story; my wife and I read English storybooks to Aisha. I chose books with colorful pictures and simple, engaging stories that she could relate to. While reading, I asked her some questions like, “What do you see?”, “Can you find the cat?” or “What color is this?” This activity helped her think in English and respond in English, even if it was just one word at a time. Over time, she knew more vocabulary, and she began to recognize common words and phrases.

Listening to English songs was another helpful activity. I played English children’s songs at home and even while we played together. She loved singing along. Her favorite songs were “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “The Wheels on the Bus.” Singing made learning English feel like a game rather than a lesson, and she could quickly absorb new words and pronunciation. I introduced Aisha to English spoken by native speakers. Even though it was through songs, it helped her develop more accurate and natural pronunciation, like a native speaker.
