My Teacher
Humairah binti Zul Hasimi
My teacher,
The man, not a myth, but a legend,
Often singing praises of his students and his views,
Why don’t we change perspectives a little?
To bear witness for once
to the artist becoming the muse.
Who is my educator?
If it was asked of me, I’d say,
He was the one who threw the pebble
into the calm of my mind,
But was it ever calm to begin with?
My mind wasn’t calm,
Rather it was disturbed and anxious,
But when he threw the pebble into my lake
that which was gurgling beneath the surface,
It awakened the chaos which was meant to be
With ripples of familiarity
I held dear,
To the person God intended for me,
Written in my destiny.
My Teacher
He was the one who tapped into my soul,
Weaved into it the threads of his teachings,
Awakening the poet, writer and eccentric within,
Etching a smile on my face with his greetings.
And I reply: “Yes, that is my teacher, who preaches life’s meaning.”
You may think you’re a failure,
A humble man carrying knowledge on his shoulders,
But is beauty not in the eye of the beholder?
All I see is a man who talks proper,
Whose smile graces the hearts of the students,
With hands that only give and give,
A sincere heart that wins
In the eyes of Allah, do your teachings live.
This is the dancing star,
In which you’ve helped me birth into life,
The Amazing Poet, my philosophy teacher,
Who threw the pebble into my lake
And made the poet in me feel alive.
