Puisi Leni Marlina
1)
Sahabat,
bukannya aku sombong tak mau bermain bersamamu, sahabatku sayang,
sepulang sekolah, aku menyusuri pematang
seragamku mengusung debu, menggenggam sisa pelajaran
tapi di sini, di bawah langit desa yang memerah,
aku belajar dari lumpur yang melekat di kaki.
Ibuku menyambut dengan senyum dan cangkul,
“Yuk, Nak, sawah ini tak bisa menunggu,” katanya,
dan aku tahu, di balik suaranya yang lembut,
terdapat mimpi-mimpi yang tertanam lebih dalam dari akar padi.
2)
Sahabat, jika kau masih penasaran,
setiap ayunan cangkul adalah doa yang terucap,
menggali harapan di tanah yang kami cintai,
air mengalir dari irigasi dan keringat di pelipis,
mengisi celah-celah yang retak oleh musim.
Aku tak mengukur waktu dengan bel sekolah,
tapi dengan jatuhnya matahari ke dalam pelukan sawah,
di sinilah aku belajar matematika yang lain,
menghitung bulir padi, mengkalkulasi masa depan.
3)
Saat teman-temanku berbicara tentang cita-cita tinggi,
aku menuliskannya di tanah, bukan di atas kertas,
menanamnya dengan kedua tangan, mencangkulnya dengan harap,
di ladang ini, aku belajar apa arti bertahan.
4)
Angin desa berhembus membawa aroma bumi,
dan aku merasakan jejak ayahku yang dulu juga di sini,
menyusuri pematang yang sama, bercakap dengan rerumputan,
dan aku tahu, aku tak sendiri dalam setiap langkah.
Malam datang merangkak pelan,
langit beralih menjadi kanvas hitam berbintang,
aku pulang dengan hati yang lega,
sebab di antara peluh, ada impian yang tumbuh.

A one sentence about this poem: The mother’s struggle for her child’s future.
Saat teman-temanku berbicara tentang cita-cita tinggi,
aku menuliskannya di tanah, bukan di atas kertas,
I think this is a very good line, because the metaphor is beautiful.
This piece reflects a heartfelt journey of resilience and dedication. It beautifully portrays a child’s balance between school life and working in the rice fields, guided by a parent’s dreams. Through poetic imagery, it delves into themes of family bonds, rural life, and aspirations rooted in labor and connection to the earth. The narrative emphasizes how perseverance and humility shape one’s understanding of life, beyond textbooks, through hands-on learning in nature’s classroom.
The meaning of this title for me is that even though it is difficult for us to part with friends, we must put our mother first and be devoted to her.

Dear friend,
It’s not that I’m arrogant to not want to play with you, my dear friend,
after school, I walk along the bund
my uniform carrying dust, clutching the remnants of lessons
but here, under the reddening village sky,
I learn from the mud that clings to my feet.
Muhammad Abi Dzar Ar-Rahman / 21019052
JD I-E TRANS JM 9-10 NKall 21 LM
– Imagery: The poem paints vivid scenes—”my uniform carrying dust,” “under the reddening village sky,” and “the mud that clings to my feet”—which evoke a tactile sense of place and experience, contrasting the ordinary school day with the rawness of the rural setting.
– Metaphor: The “mud that clings to my feet” symbolizes life’s challenges, burdens, or lessons that are difficult to shake off, yet remain integral to growth and learning. The “remnants of lessons” reflect the lingering impact of education, which doesn’t end when the school day does but continues to shape and teach in more subtle ways.
– Personification: The “sky” is described as “reddening,” implying that it is actively participating in the setting of the scene, almost as if it is responding emotionally to the speaker’s experience. The mud “clings” to the feet, almost as if it is something that attaches itself with purpose or intention, symbolizing the lessons that life imprints on the individual.
– Contrast: The poem contrasts the seemingly mundane (walking along the bund in a dusty uniform) with deeper, more introspective learning (“I learn from the mud”). It also contrasts the carefree nature of childhood play with the weight of personal growth and the grounded, humble learning that happens outside the classroom.
– Symbolism: The “mud” symbolizes the difficult, sometimes messy lessons of life that are often more significant and lasting than formal education. The “red sky” symbolizes the end of the day, a time of reflection and quiet, while the “dust” represents the residue of the day’s work and experiences.
– Tone: The tone is contemplative and humble, with a sense of quiet wisdom. There is a recognition of growth through simplicity, where even the dirt and struggles of the rural landscape are sources of learning and insight. The speaker reflects on how the non-academic lessons of life, like those from the mud, are just as valuable, if not more so, than what is taught in school.
Sahabat,
bukannya aku sombong tak mau bermain bersamamu, sahabatku sayang,
sepulang sekolah, aku menyusuri pematang
seragamku mengusung debu, menggenggam sisa pelajaran
tapi di sini, di bawah langit desa yang memerah,
aku belajar dari lumpur yang melekat di kaki.
This poetry captures the beauty and struggles of rural life with heartfelt emotion, providing a glimpse into the simplicity and depth of human experiences. The juxtaposition of school life and nature’s lessons resonates universally, making it an excellent choice to explore the intersection of cultural roots and personal growth. Its vivid imagery and emotional narrative offer a compelling subject for translation, highlighting the richness of the original language and the challenge of conveying its nuances.

The translation employs a balance between literal and dynamic equivalence to maintain both the meaning and emotional depth of the original poem. The technique involves retaining the metaphoric elements, such as “the reddening village sky” and “the mud clinging to my feet,” to preserve the rural imagery and its symbolic resonance. The strategy prioritizes the flow and readability of the English version, ensuring cultural elements like “pematang” are conveyed in a way that resonates with non-Indonesian readers by using “rice field dike.” This approach honors the poem’s tone and context while making it accessible to a global audience.

Meaning of the Stanza:
This stanza conveys themes of hard work, hope, and connection to the land. The speaker addresses a friend, offering insight into the meaning behind their actions. “Setiap ayunan cangkul adalah doa yang terucap” (Every swing of the hoe is a prayer spoken) suggests that the labor of working the land is not just physical work but also a form of prayer, an act of faith and dedication. The next line, “menggali harapan di tanah yang kami cintai” (digging for hope in the land we love), implies that through their toil, they seek to create something better, rooted in love for the land. “Air mengalir dari irigasi dan keringat di pelipis” (water flows from the irrigation and sweat on our brows) emphasizes the physical and emotional effort involved in this process, while “mengisi celah-celah yang retak oleh musim” (filling the cracks worn by the seasons) symbolizes the healing and restoration that comes from their persistent labor, restoring what has been damaged over time
Christy Yulianda Putri 24 JD I-E TRANS JM9-10 NKall21 LM.
Translation of the Stanza:
“Friend, if you are still curious,
every swing of the hoe is a prayer spoken,
digging for hope in the land we love,
water flows from the irrigation and sweat on our brows,
filling the cracks worn by the seasons.”
Angin desa berhembus membawa aroma bumi,
dan aku merasakan jejak ayahku yang dulu juga di sini,
menyusuri pematang yang sama, bercakap dengan rerumputan,
dan aku tahu, aku tak sendiri dalam setiap langkah.
Translation Strategy:
The translation employs dynamic equivalence, focusing on conveying the meaning, emotional tone, and metaphors of the original text while making it natural and understandable in English. Several translation techniques are used such as:
Literal Translation:
The line “The village wind blows, carrying the scent of the earth” closely follows the original Indonesian phrasing, as the meaning is straightforward and clear.
Similarly, “and I know, I am not alone in every step” translates directly from “dan aku tahu, aku tak sendiri dalam setiap langkah”.
Metaphor Translation:
The metaphor of “jejak ayahku” (“the traces of my father”) is translated as “the traces of my father”, keeping the connection to past generations alive in the translation.
“Bercakap dengan rerumputan” (“talking to the grass”) is kept as is because it conveys a poetic connection to nature. It symbolizes a peaceful, almost spiritual communication with the land.

Techniques and Strategies:
The translation uses literal translation to retain the original meaning and symbolism, such as “Every swing of the hoe is a prayer spoken” and “filling the cracks worn by the seasons.” Imagery preservation is key in maintaining the vivid natural scenes, such as the “water flows” and “sweat on our brows,” ensuring the emotional and physical labor is expressed clearly. The cultural context of working the land and its connection to hope and faith is preserved, and sentence restructuring is used to ensure the translation flows naturally in English while maintaining the reflective and contemplative tone of the original text.

In translating the stanza number 4, I using the translation strategies which is ‘dynamic equivalence’ and ‘modulation strategies’. Dynamic equivalence was essential to convey the emotional and cultural meaning behind the imagery, such as the connection between the speaker and their father through the sensory experience of the wind and earth. The phrase “angin desa berhembus membawa aroma bumi” was translated as “the village wind blows, carrying the scent of the earth,” maintaining the rural atmosphere and sensory detail. Modulation was applied in “dan aku merasakan jejak ayahku yang dulu juga di sini” (“and I feel the traces of my father who was once here”), where “traces” was used to suggest a lasting presence, connecting past and present. “Menyusuri pematang yang sama, bercakap dengan rerumputan” (“walking the same paths, talking with the grasses”) was translated with a literal approach to preserve the tactile, intimate relationship with nature. Finally, “dan aku tahu, aku tak sendiri dalam setiap langkah” (“and I know, I am not alone in every step”) was translated directly to retain the personal and contemplative tone, emphasizing the feeling of continuity between generations. This strategy prioritizes capturing the depth of the speaker’s reflection while ensuring the translation flows naturally in English.

Misalnya, “sepulang sekolah, aku menyusuri pematang” diterjemahkan menjadi “after school, I walk along the embankment,” yang mempertahankan gambar suasana pedesaan yang sederhana. “Seragamku mengusung debu, menggenggam sisa pelajaran” menjadi “my uniform carries dust, holding onto the remnants of lessons,” yang tetap menggambarkan kehidupan yang penuh pelajaran. “Belajar dari lumpur yang melekat di kaki” diterjemahkan menjadi “I learn from the mud that sticks to my feet,” untuk menunjukkan bagaimana pengalaman hidup yang berat mengajarkan kita nilai-nilai yang berharga. Teknik ini menjaga kedalaman makna dan kesederhanaan yang ada dalam puisi.

Quiz 19
1. What is the meaning of the poem to you?
The poem beautifully illustrates the connection between hard work, family, and the land. It speaks of the quiet yet profound lessons learned through labor—how everyday tasks like farming are imbued with deeper meanings of resilience, growth, and hope. The speaker reflects on the value of patience, perseverance, and the connection to one’s roots. The imagery of planting seeds and watching dreams grow in the soil emphasizes that true learning and growth happen not just in classrooms but in the world around us, often through the simplest, most humble experiences.
2. Which line/stanza do you like very much?
“Ibuku menyambut dengan senyum dan cangkul,
“Yuk, Nak, sawah ini tak bisa menunggu,” katanya,
dan aku tahu, di balik suaranya yang lembut,
terdapat mimpi-mimpi yang tertanam lebih dalam dari akar padi.”
This stanza is powerful because it paints such a vivid picture of love, responsibility, and generational knowledge passed down through hard work. The mother’s gentle voice carries the weight of dreams that have been cultivated over time, rooted in the soil. It highlights how even in the simplicity of farm work, deep aspirations are nurtured, and these lessons shape the future.
3. What is one of the business ideas that comes to your mind after reading the poem?
A sustainable farming education program that teaches children and young adults the values of working the land, the importance of patience, and the connection between nature and growth. This could be a hands-on program in rural areas where participants learn farming skills while also understanding the cultural significance of agriculture and its role in sustaining families and communities. It could combine practical farming techniques with workshops on environmental sustainability and entrepreneurship, empowering young people to create businesses that honor both tradition and innovation in farming.
1. The poem portrays the speaker’s deep connection to the land, their family, and the lessons learned from hard work in the fields, highlighting the beauty of simple yet meaningful labor over societal expectations.
2. I like the line: “Setiap ayunan cangkul adalah doa yang terucap,” because it beautifully conveys the idea that each action, no matter how simple, carries deep meaning and intention.
3. A business idea that comes to mind is creating a sustainable farming initiative that supports local communities, combining agricultural education with eco-friendly practices to promote both environmental and economic growth.

“Malam datang merangkak pelan,
langit beralih menjadi kanvas hitam berbintang,
aku pulang dengan hati yang lega,
sebab di antara peluh, ada impian yang tumbuh.”
The use of simple and poetic words makes me like this verse.
“Aku pulang dengan hati yang lega” has the meaning of the author tells the reader about the character of the poem who finds peace after working hard in life.

Here is the English translation product by me:
“Night comes creeping slowly,
Sky turned into a black canvas of stars,
I went home with a relieved heart,
Cause among the sweat, there are dreams that grow.”

The translation strategy that I used in this verse is literal translation.
With this strategy I can maintain the real meaning of the original poem.
Even though the rhythm is not that beauty, I hope the reader still enjoy to read it.
